CORTLAND, N.Y. – Daniel Derice's 3-pointer with 1:46 remaining gave Oneonta a 2-point lead and the visiting Red Dragons defeated Cortland, 76-70, in a SUNYAC men's basketball matchup.
Five players scored in double figures for Oneonta (12-7, 8-4 SUNYAC), led by Dylan Trombley with 18 points. Derice finished with 16 points, and Derice and Trombley shared the team lead with eight rebounds apiece. Sean Nolan finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and three steals, Dylan Craft amassed 12 points and seven boards, and Michael Ortale, Jr. had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Kareem Lubin (South Blooming Grove/Washingtonville) led Cortland (7-10, 3-7 SUNYAC) with 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and
Riley McEvoy (Homer) made four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points.
Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) and
AJ Morales (Hopewell Junction/Millbrook) each scored seven points, and
Humberto Cabrera (Millbrook) led the team with six assists.
The teams remained tight most of the first half, but Oneonta scored seven straight to take a 44-33 lead with 32 seconds left. Cortland trailed by nine at halftime, 44-35, but quickly scored the five five points of the second half to set up a tight game the rest of the way.
Cortland eventually knotted the game at 60-60 on a McEvoy 3-pointer with 5:49 left and took its first lead of the second half at 63-61 on another McEvoy trey with 5:04 remaining. A little over a minute later McEvoy nailed another 3-pointer to tie the game at 66-66, and
AJ Lawton's (Saratoga Springs) 3-pointer with 3:07 left gave the hosts their final lead of the day at 69-68.
Following the Derice triple that put Oneonta back on top, Cortland missed a layup but got the ball back on a Lawton steal with 56 seconds left. McEvoy's 3-point attempt with 45 seconds left went in-and-out, and Trombley hit a short running jumper with 18 seconds remaining to put Oneonta up by four. Cortland made one free throw with 11 seconds left, but Derice sealed the win when he made the second of two free throws with just under 10 seconds remaining.
Oneonta shot 46 percent overall and 39 percent (7-of-18) from 3-point range. Cortland ended the day at 42 percent overall and 41 percent (11-of-27) from deep.
Cortland hosts Fredonia on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in a league contest.
