WILTON, N.Y. – Behind the strength of four top-six finishers, the Cortland women's golf team finished first out of eight teams at the Northeast Women's Golf Conference (NWGC) Fall Classic.
The one-day tournament is one of two during the weekend to be hosted by the conference at the McGregor Links Country Club. The NWGC Fall Invitational will be held on Sunday, with Cortland scheduled to tee off at approximately 11:30 a.m. Neither of the two tournaments are the official conference championship, which is scheduled for next April 22-23 in Bloomfield, Conn.
Cortland won the Classic with a score of 334, followed by Suffolk at 371 and Nazareth at 414.
Sophie Oristian (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) was Cortland's top finisher in second place out of 42 golfers with an 81 on the par-72 layout. Suffolk's Isabel Smith earned medalist honors with a 79.
Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Williamsville East) tied for third place with an 83 and
Claudia Winterberg (Harrisburg, NC/Hickory Ridge) finished fifth with an 84.
Kristina Visniesky (Buffalo/Orchard Park) placed sixth with an 86, and
Sarah Wiggins (Carson City, NV/Carson) registered a 96 for 11th place.
