Six-Match Win Streak Snapped with Four-Set Loss at Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team had its six-match winning streak snapped with a four-set non-league loss at Ithaca. The Bombers won the first set, 25-14, before Cortland responded with a 25-16 win in the second. Ithaca, however, closed things out with 25-17 and 25-19 decisions in the third and fourth sets.
 
Cortland (13-4) was led by Allie Sturgess (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) with 10 kills and 10 digs and Alexa Guedez (Rye/Rye Neck) with nine kills and four blocks, all solo. Zoe Staats (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson) added seven kills, Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) led the team with 19 assists, Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) had 15 assists and seven digs, and Carly Haegele (Commack) recorded three aces and 14 digs. Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) led the Red Dragons with 19 digs.
 
Ithaca (15-3), which captured its 12th straight victory, was paced by Faith Sabatier's 13 kills and Aleka Darko's 12 kills. Maddie Cox finished with 36 assists, Julia Costa had 13 digs, and Elli Gaskill served four aces. Ithaca finished the night with a .173 team attack percentage compared to Cortland's .095 mark.
 
Ithaca took control of the first set with a 11-0 run that turned a tight 12-11 lead into a 23-11 margin. In the second set, Cortland pushed a 7-5 lead to 15-7 and led by at least six from that point. Cortland was within 18-15 in the third set before being outscored 7-2 the rest of the stanza, and in the fourth set the Red Dragons grabbed a 10-8 lead before Ithaca scored nine straight to go up 17-10. Cortland did get back to within three at 20-17 but couldn't complete the comeback.
 
Cortland hosts a non-league tri-match this Saturday. The Red Dragons face Clarkson at 1 p.m., followed by Clarkson versus Williams at 3:30 p.m. and Cortland versus Williams at 6 p.m.
