Red Dragons Skate to 3-3 Tie at #11 Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, PA. – The nationally 11th-ranked Wilkes men's hockey team scored two late third-period goals in earning a 3-3 overtime tie versus Cortland Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the Toyota Sportsplex.

Junior Sutter Donegan (Cicero/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) led the Red Dragons (1-0-1) with a pair of goals. Senior Trevor Veneklase (Brentwood, TN/Seahawks Hockey Club) netted a goal, junior Nate Berke (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and sophomore Johnny Facchini (Succasunna, NJ/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) each collected two assists and senior Nick Grupp (Depew/Brantford 99ers) contributed an assist. Senior goalie Luca Durante (Brampton, ON/Aurora Tigers) registered 34 saves.

Matt Carlson tallied a goal and an assist for the Colonels (0-0-1). Jimmy O'Kane and Kyle Mandleur each scored a goal, while Nick Godfrey, Phil Erickson and Cam Lowe picked up one assist apiece. Goalie Garrett Nieto made 32 saves.

After a scoreless first period, O'Kane gave Wilkes a 1-0 lead at the 13:56 mark of the second period. Cortland answered with three straight goals to build a 3-1 lead early in the third period. Donegan scored on the power play at 16:46 of the second period, and Veneklase added a power-play goal 12 seconds before the end of the period. Donegan's second goal at 3:41 of the third period put the Red Dragons ahead, 3-1.

Carlson pulled the Colonels to within 3-2 with a short-handed goal at 15:58 before Mandleur sent the game into overtime with his goal at 18:41 as Wilkes pulled Nieto for an extra skater. With 59 seconds remaining in regulation, Cortland took a five-minute major penalty, but the Red Dragons were able to keep Wilkes off the scoreboard as Durante turned aside five shots in overtime to preserve the 3-3 tie.
