Cortland Earns Four-Set Victory at Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team shook off a tough loss in the second set and the Red Dragons remained unbeaten in SUNYAC action with a 25-17, 28-30, 25-17, 25-13 victory at Geneseo.

The contest was a rematch of last year's SUNYAC championship match. Cortland, the defending league champ, improved to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play. Geneseo dropped to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the league. Cortland will travel to Brockport (currently 4-0 in the league) for a 1 p.m. match Saturday.
 
Zoe Staats (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson) led Cortland with 16 kills and a .424 attack percentage. Giovanna Rossi (Nichols/Tioga Central) posted career-highs of 10 kills and four blocks, Allie Sturgess (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) had 10 kills and eight digs, and Caterina Mangogna (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) totaled eight kills, six digs and five blocks.
 
Alexa Guedez (Rye/Rye Neck) tied her career high with nine blocks and added six kills and two aces. Megan McMahon (Ballston Spa) dished out a career-best 27 assists, Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) finished with 19 assists, two aces and 11 digs, Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) led the Red Dragons with 15 digs, and Carly Haegele (Commack) chipped in with nine digs.
 
Geneseo was led by Linda Rossi's eight kills, while Isabella Imbo and Jackie Borland put down seven kills each. Borland led the Knights with six blocks, Julia Wallace had five blocks, and Emily Haber paced the team with 20 digs.
 
Cortland finished the evening with a .211 attack percentage and 16 blocks – its highest total since registering 16 blocks at RIT in October of 2013. Geneseo finished with an .081 attack percentage and 10 blocks.
 
Cortland finished the first set on a 5-1 run after holding a 20-16 lead. The Red Dragons hit .480 for the set (14 kills, two errors in 25 attempts). The second set featured 16 ties and five lead changes. Cortland led 23-22 but then had to fight off four set points for the Knights. Geneseo, however, scored the final two points on a kill and an ace by Rossi.
 
The Red Dragons extended a 12-11 lead to 17-12 in the third set and led by at least four points the rest of the way. In the fourth, Cortland mounted a 17-3 streak to turn a 3-3 tie into a 20-6 lead. The Red Dragons hit at a .310 clip (13 kills, four errors in 29 attempts) during the set.
