ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cortland men's soccer team won its fifth consecutive game, defeating Ithaca, 3-1, in non-conference play Sunday afternoon at Carp Wood Field. The Red Dragons improved to 9-3-2 with the win. The Bombers dropped to 2-6-4.
Sophomore
Yasin Choukri (Wilton, CT) paced Cortland with two goals. Junior
Alex Lessman (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage) scored a goal, and junior
Mateo Marra (Ossining) registered two assists. Freshman goalie
Luke van Galen (Georgetown, MA) made six saves.
Conor Baird tallied Ithaca's goal with Jack Longo picking up the assist. Goalie Johannes Berghahn recorded five saves.
Lessman gave Cortland a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. Marra bent a free kick deep into the left side of the box that Lessman one-timed for his second goal of the season. Choukri's first goal came on a header off another free kick by Marra in the 60th minute. Baird cut Cortland's lead to 2-1 in the 87th minute, scoring on a header from a cross from Longo. Choukri sealed the Cortland victory when he finished off a breakaway for his sixth goal of the season with 35 seconds to play for the 3-1 final.
