Cortland and Wesleyan Tie 1-1; Cardinals Advance on PKs

CORTLAND, N.Y. – After 110 minutes of soccer that ended in a 1-1 tie, the Wesleyan women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Div. III Tournament by virtue of winning a penalty-kick shootout, 3-1, at nationally 20th-ranked Cortland on Saturday afternoon at Holloway Field. The Cardinals (8-5-6) move on to face fifth-ranked Messiah on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Graduate student Jayden Kelley (East Berne/Voorhesville) scored her eighth goal of the season for the Red Dragons, which finished their season at 13-1-5. Graduate student Jaden Galluzzo (Commack) and junior Kayla Valerioti (Oakdale/Connetquot) each recorded an assist. With her point, Galluzzo became just the fifth player in program history to reach 100 career points (41 goals, 18 assists). Sophomore goalie Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) turned aside eight shots.

Senior Audrey Lavey (Newton, MA/Newton South) scored the goal for Wesleyan with senior Dani Milovanov (Milford, CT/Trumbull) assisting. Senior goalie Sarah Hammond (Canton, MI) made four saves.

After a scoreless first half, Lavey gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute, scoring on a header off a free-kick serve from the right side by Milovanov. Just over three minutes later, Cortland had an excellent chance denied at the right post by Hammond when freshman Julia DeTurris (Hicksville) struck a 25-yard free kick. Kelley tied the game in the 78th minute. Galluzzo sent a cross into the box from the left side that Valerioti touched ahead to Kelley, who one-timed a shot inside the right post.

Galluzzo nearly put Cortland ahead in the 81st minute, but Hammond punched her shot on a semi-breakaway over the crossbar to keep the game tied. Wesleyan had three quality chances to score later in the game. Senior Grace Devanny (Concord, NH) was stuffed by Spendal on a shot deep in the box in the 86th minute. Devanny then fired a shot off the crossbar in the 87th minute, and Spendal punched an open shot by freshman Catherine Gallagher (Reading, MA/Austin Prep) over the crossbar in the 88th minute, which led to two 10-minute overtimes in which neither team generated a quality chance.

In the penalty-kick shootout, the Cardinals led 1-0 after three attempts and 2-1 after four tries. Senior Kate Hausladen (Oak Ridge, TN) then sent Wesleyan into the next round when she converted the team's fifth opportunity.
