Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#14 Cortland Falls to Brockport, 3-2, in SUNYAC Semifinals on Late Goal

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Graduate student Matthew Stefaniw (Rochester/Eastridge) scored with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the fourth-seeded Brockport men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory at top-seeded and nationally 14th-ranked Cortland Wednesday night in the SUNYAC Semifinals. The Red Dragons dropped to 12-5-2 on the season and await a possible at-large bid into the NCAA Div. III playoffs. The Golden Eagles improved to 9-3-6 and advanced to face second-seeded Oneonta in the title game Saturday.

Junior Mateo Marra (Ossining) and sophomore Cade Denlinger (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) scored goals for Cortland. Junior Marco Cottone (Syosset) picked up an assist. Freshman goalie Luke van Galen (Georgetown, MA) made two saves.

Senior Seamus Parker (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) netted two goals for Brockport. Stefaniw, senior Kolbi Maddy (Sayville) and sophomore Warren Banks (Beacon) each collected an assist. Junior goalie Andrew Taylor (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) stopped nine shots.

Parker gave the Golden Eagles the lead in the seventh minute, finishing off a shot at the right post after Stefaniw flicked on Maddy's long throw. Cortland created several quality scoring chances after falling behind. In the 29th minute, Taylor made a save on junior Jack Coleman's (Newark Valley/Maine-Endwell) header deep in the box. Taylor then denied a bid at the right post on a driven shot by sophomore Matt Shultz (Oneonta) in the 32nd minute, and Shultz rang a 20-yard shot off the crossbar and out of play in the 39th minute.

The Red Dragons wasted little time in tying the score in the second half. Cottone served a pass into the middle of the box from the right side that Denlinger finished off with a clean header in the 50th minute. Marra gave Cortland a 2-1 lead in the 70th minute, converting a penalty kick after he was dragged down in the box on a breakaway.

Just over three minutes later, Parker's second goal of the game tied the score at 2-2 as he drove a shot from the right side that caromed off the inside of the left post and over the goal line. Just when the game appeared to be heading into overtime, Brockport forced a turnover and Stefaniw hit a shot from the right side that snuck inside the left post for the game winner.

UPDATE (11/5/22): Denlinger and Marra were named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the tournament.
