Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Red Dragons Hand #4 Plattsburgh First-Ever NEWHL Loss, 1-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) scored her fourth goal of the season just past the midway point of the second period and sophomore goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) stopped 30 shots as the Cortland women's ice hockey team knocked off nationally fourth-ranked Plattsburgh, 1-0, Friday night at Alumni Arena in NEWHL action.

The Red Dragons improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The Cardinals fell to 8-2 and 6-1 and lost their first-ever NEWHL game after going 72-0-2 through the team's first 74 contests.

Senior Molly McCabe (Webster/18UAA Webster) and sophomore Beth McArthur (Peterborough, ON/Lawrence University) assisted on Hlasnick's goal. Senior goalie Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, CA/Anaheim Lady Ducks) registered 26 saves for Plattsburgh.

After a scoreless first period in which Cortland outshot the Cardinals, 9-5, Hlasnick netted the game winner 10:55 into the second period. McCabe sent a pass behind Cortland's goal to McArthur below the right faceoff crcle. McArthur sent a long cross-ice pass out of the zone that barely evaded a Plattsburgh stick near the blue line. Hlasnick gathered the puck, skated down the right boards and wristed a shot into the upper right corner.

The Cardinals closed the rest of the period with 13 shots on goal, but Goergen turned aside every chance. Play was mostly even during much of the third period with both goalies holding down their creases without allowing another goal. Plattsburgh pulled Nease with 50 seconds remaining, but Goergen denied two Cardinal shots as they skated with the extra player to seal the 1-0 win with her third shutout of the season and program record-tying eighth of her career.
