Cortland Controls Play Early to Defeat Dickinson, 63-54, in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO – Cortland jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead and the Red Dragons held on to defeat Dickinson College, 63-54, in women's basketball non-league action in the Puerto Rico Clasico at Coliseo Roberto Clemente. 
 
Cortland improved to 9-2 with the victory while snapping the Red Devils' (7-3) six-game winning streak. Cortland is now idle until hosting Fredonia in SUNYAC play on Friday, Jan. 6. 
 
Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) led Cortland with 17 points, 13 in the first half. She made 3-of-4 3-pointers and 6-of-7 free throws, and she added three assists and four rebounds. Maggie Malone (Cornwall) finished with 14 points, including two 3-pointers, along with three steals and five rebounds, and Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) added 11 points and four rebounds. Sarah Tully (East Aurora) finished with eight points and a team-high six rebounds and Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) totaled five points and three steals. 
 
Clair Marion scored 20 points and registered seven steals and three assists for Dickinson. Caitlin Blackman finished with 13 points and Mia Kolb tallied six points, nine rebounds and four steals. 
 
Cortland shot 39 percent from the field overall and 47 percent (8-for-17) from the 3-point arc. The Red Dragons also connected on 17-of-22 free throws (77 percent). Dickinson ended at 36 percent from the floor, but only 20 percent (3-of-15) from deep, and the Red Devils hit 13-of-19 foul shots (68 percent). 
 
Cortland led 20-8 after one quarter behind seven points from Malone, and the Red Dragons pushed the lead to 26-8 in the first two minutes of the second quarter on baskets by Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois), Malone and Morano. The Red Dragons' lead grew to 32-13 later in the quarter on a Morano trey and a Tully 3-point play. Dickinson got back to within 32-18 with 2:45 left in the half, but Cortland closed the period on an 8-2 run to take a 40-20 advantage into the halftime locker room. 
 
Longford's 3-pointer with 2:21 left in the third gave Cortland a 45-22 lead, and the Red Dragons held a 54-36 lead entering the final 10 minutes. Dickinson made a push late to get to with eight at 60-52 on a Marion basket, but Longford hit three of her final four fouls shots to make it 63-52 and seal the victory.
