MECHANICSBURG, PA. – Junior J.C. Cardenas (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) captured the 133-pound weight-class title and eight others Cortland wrestlers placed in the top six Friday and Saturday at the Messiah College's Petrofes Invitational. Cardenas, ranked fourth nationally by D3wrestle.com and eighth by the NWCA, won his second straight Petrofes title with a 4-0 record.
 
Cortland finished third out of 15 schools in the final team standings with 147.5 points, behind only Alvernia (201.5) and Springfield (159.5). Rounding out the top five were Muhlenberg (124) and Shenandoah (89.5).
 
In addition to Cardenas' title, freshman Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) and senior Brian Torres (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) each reached his championship match and earned runner-up finishes. Juniors Ryan Burgbacher (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) and Steven Gazzillo (New Windsor/Cornwall) placed third, while sophomore Kyle Klein (Miller Place) and freshman Chris Mableton (Bay Shore) finished fifth and senior Richard Munoz (Centereach/Ward Melville) and sophomore Pat Ross (Woodstock/Onteora) earned sixth-place finishes.
 
Cardenas, now 17-0 on the season, opened with a technical fall and a major decision. After posting a 22-6 technical fall against Shenandoah's Sean Rinebolt in the semifinals, he capped his weekend with a 10-4 decision in the championship bout over Gianni Manginelli of Springfield.
 
Centrone raised his record to 11-2 on the season with his 4-1 mark at 149 pounds. He reached the championship bout with a technical fall, a medical forfeit, a major decision and an 11-6 decision over Chance Babb of Alvernia in the semifinals before falling to Springfield's Chase Parrott, 4-0, in the title bout. Torres finished with a 3-1 record over the weekend and now stands at 12-2 on the season. He opened with a decision, followed by a major decision and another decision to reach the 184-pound title match, where he lost a tough 6-5 decision to Isaac Kassis of Alvernia.
 
Burgbacher registered a 4-1 record at 149 pounds with four pins. He reached the semifinals with a pair of falls before dropping an 8-2 decision to Parrott in the semifinals. Burgbacher rebounded with first-period pins in his final two matches to earn his third-place finish. Gazzillo, who competed mainly at 165 pounds last season, finished the weekend with one of Cortland's most-impressive performances, posting a 6-1 record with five consecutive pins at 197 pounds. His lone loss came against eventual champion Mauro Pellot of Alvernia in his first bout before reeling off six consecutive wins through the consolation bracket.
 
Mableton, now 17-5 on the season, finished 4-2 at 141 pounds, including two pins and a technical fall to advance to the semifinals. Klein improved to 15-5 overall with his 5-1 record at 157 pounds, earning bonus points with two pins and a major decision. Ross finished 4-2 with two falls at 174 pounds to raise his season record to 10-4, while Munoz, now 10-3 overall, posted a 2-2 record at 125 pounds with a technical fall and a major decision that led him into the semifinals.
