CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) and
Maggie Malone (Cornwall) each scored 15 points as Cortland defeated visiting Fredonia, 76-48, to remain undefeated in SUNYAC women's basketball play.
Cortland posted its 14th consecutive victory to improve to 15-2 overall and 11-0 in the league. Fredonia dropped to 10-9 overall and 5-7 in the conference.
Travers shot 6-of-11 from the field with two 3-pointers, and she shared the team lead with six rebounds and three steals. Malone matched her career high with three made 3-pointers and ended with 15 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Sarah Tully (East Aurora) also reached double figures for Cortland with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Tully and
Julia Siler (Seaford) each tied Travers with six rebounds, while Siler matched Travers with three steals.
Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) chipped in with nine points, two steals and a team-best five assists.
Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) also scored nine points and added five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
Katie Pitcher and Lauren Mickley paced Fredonia with 10 points each. Renee Park hauled in seven rebounds and Jaden Sciotti had a team-best four assists.
Cortland led 16-12 after one quarter, and the game was tied at 21-21 after a Pitcher layup with 6:05 left in the half. The Red Dragons outscored the Blue Devils 16-5 the rest of the period, with five different players contributing during the run, and Cortland led 37-26 at halftime.
Cortland's lead remained in double figures the entire second half. The Red Dragons led 50-37 after three quarters and extended the margin to 20 three minutes into the fourth. Cortland led 63-45 at the 4:06 mark and finished the game on a 13-3 run.
Cortland will host Plattsburgh Friday at 5:30 p.m.
