CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland won seven out of 10 matches, including a victory by Demetrius Henry (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) in a battle of nationally ranked wrestlers, as the Red Dragons defeated visiting Oswego, 32-12, in a dual match at Corey Gymnasium.

Cortland (6-1) opened the match with a 7-1 decision by Brian Torres (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) at 197 pounds. Torres, now 19-6 on the season, is ranked third in the NWCA Mideast Region. Oswego answered with a 10-4 decision by Anthony Cascen at 197 pounds, but the Red Dragons took control with Ben Klei's (Victor) 16-0 technical fall in 4:56 at 285 pounds, a pin in 1:36 by Cody Merwin (Walton) at 125 pounds and a forfeit win by J.C. Cardenas (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) at 133 pounds to take a 26-3 lead. Klei improved to 20-11 and Merwin is 19-5 with their victories. Cardenas, ranked seventh nationally at 133, is now 12-3.

The Red Dragons clinched the team victory when Chandler Merwin (Walton) posted a 4-2 decision at 149 pounds. He led 3-1 after two periods, with Oswego picking up a point on an escape with 16 seconds left. Riding time accounted for the final point. Merwin is ranked second regionally and is now 24-5.

Oswego won the next two bouts as Thomas Coll registered a pin in 1:41 at 157 and Isaac Mathews won 8-5 at 165.

In the marquee matchup of the afternoon, Henry faced off at 174 with Oswego's Charlie Grygas, who entered the day with only one loss on the season and who defeated Henry in the finals of the New York State Collegiate Championships in overtime in November. Henry entered the match with a 23-2 record and ranked ninth nationally and second regionally, while Grygas is ranked seventh nationally and first regionally.

After a scoreless first period, Grygas earned an escape just moments into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Henry returned the favor with a quick escape to start the third to tie the match. Henry broke through with a takedown with 19 seconds remaining to take a 3-1 lead. After a restart, Grygas earned an escape with seven seconds left but Henry held on for the 3-2 win.

Prior to the match, Cortland honored its seniors - Henry, Klei and James Udasco (Westtown/Minisink Valley), along with volunteer assistant coach Pat Owens. In addition to Henry's and Klei's victories during the match, Udasco picked up a 2-1 win in an exhibition match.

Cortland will host Ithaca on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as part of the Rumble & Tumble combined event with the Red Dragon women's gymnastics team.
