BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Cortland men's swimming and diving team is in second place out of nine schools after the first full day of competition at the 2022 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships.
Geneseo leads the standings with 418 points, followed by Cortland with 230 and Oswego with 146. New Paltz (136), Oneonta (118), Potsdam (103), Brockport (92), Buffalo State (73) and Fredonia (63) round out the field. Competition continues Friday and Saturday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.
Cortland opened the competition Wednesday with a second-place finish by the 800-yard freestyle relay team of
Sean Zupko (Montgomery/Valley Central),
Nick Dambra (Brockport),
Mason Rowlands (Campbell Hall/Washingtonville) and
Ethan Domanico (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) in 7:02.73.
On Thursday, Zupko finished third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:43.73, 4:40.72 prelims), and the Red Dragons finished third in two relays.

Sam Zani (Rochester/Irondequoit),
Alex Hilldale (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) and
Mason Arnberg (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) were third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:26.91), while Hilldale, Arnberg, Domanico and Zani placed third in the 400-yard medley relay (3:33.18).
The top three finishers in each event earn All-SUNYAC honors. Winners are first team, runners-up are second team and third-place finishers are third team.
Cortland earned five other top-eight finishes through Thursday.
Josh Chamak (New City/Clarkstown North) was fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.04), Arnberg placed sixth in the 200-yard IM (1:57.60, 1:57.46 prelims), and
Lance Meeson (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished sixth in Wednesday's 3-meter diving (452.30 points). Domanico posted a seventh-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.50) and Zani was eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (21.96, 21.74 prelims).
Rowlands and Poli each won "B" finals to finish in ninth place – Rowlands in the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.06) and Poli in the 50-yard freestyle (21.93).
Six other Red Dragons scored points in Thursday's races.
Makiah Poli (Cortland/Home schooled) was 10th in the 200 IM (1:58.14), followed by Dambra in 11th (1:58.61, 1:58.46 prelims).
Patrick Kivlehan (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) finished 11th in the 500 freestyle (4:55.31), while
Danny Swift (Millerton/Webutuck),
Ryan Lerner (Washingtonville) and
Mo Diarra (Harlem/East Side Community) were 12th (22.31), 14th (22.65, 22.57 prelims) and 16th (22.70, 22.49 prelims), respectively, in the 50 freestyle.
