CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's basketball team reached the 20-win mark for the second straight season and the 16th time in program history with a 69-56 win over visiting Geneseo to close out the regular-season schedule.
Cortland (20-4, 16-2 SUNYAC) is the SUNYAC regular-season champion and will host the conference tournament semifinals and finals on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 25-26.
Geneseo (16-9, 12-6 SUNYAC), which had its nine-game winning streak snapped, will be the third seed and will sixth-seeded Fredonia in the first round Tuesday night. Fifth-seeded Oneonta will play at fourth-seeded Buffalo State in Tuesday's other first-round game. The Geneseo/Fredonia winner will face second-seeded New Paltz in the semifinals at Cortland Friday at 5:30 p.m., with Cortland playing the Buffalo State/Oneonta winner Friday at 7:30 p.m. The championship game will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at Cortland.
Maggie Malone (Cornwall) led Cortland with a career-high tying 22 points. She made 5-of-7 shots from 3-point range (8-for-15 overall) and also had six rebounds and three steals. Malone scored 16 of her points in the first half to help the Red Dragons take a 35-19 halftime lead.
Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) finished with 12 points and matched her career high with five assists.
Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) scored 11 points and
Sarah Tully (East Aurora) finished with eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) led the Red Dragons with six assists.
Kiley Snow was the lone double-figure scorer for Geneseo with 14 points, 12 in the second half. She hit 4-of-9 shots from the 3-point line. Hannah Stockman tallied nine points and Kerry Dennin had seven points, 10 rebounds and three assists.
Cortland led 17-12 after a tightly played first quarter, with Malone scoring 11 of the Red Dragons' 17 points. Leading 21-16 midway through the second, Cortland scored seven straight points, five by Malone, to take a 28-16 lead. The hosts also finished the last 1:33 of the half on a 7-0 streak, capped by a
Corinne Miedreich (Pearl River) 3-pointer in the waning seconds, to take their 16-point halftime lead. The advantage remained in double figures the entire second half.
Cortland shot 47 percent from the floor overall and 53 percent (9-of-17) from the arc. Geneseo was 37 percent overall and 41 percent (7-of-17) from deep. The Red Dragons held a 22-7 lead in points off turnovers as the Knights turned the ball over 20 times compared to 11 by Cortland.
