Cortland Closes Regular Season with 4-2 Setback at Canton

CANTON, N.Y. – The Canton women's ice hockey team scored three second-period goals and went on to a 4-2 victory versus Cortland Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale for both teams. With the loss, the Red Dragons fell to 17-5-1 overall and 12-5-1 in the NEWHL and will travel to face Oswego in the league semifinals on Tuesday, Mar. 1, at 7 p.m. as the third seed. The Kangaroos improved to 13-10-1 and 7-10-1 with the win.

Senior Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Amherst Knights) and freshman Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) scored goals for Cortland. Graduate student Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) recorded two assists, while senior Emily Kromer (Angola/Nazareth College) and freshman Destiny Bautista (Quesnel, BC/Okanagan Hockey Academy) each contributed one assist. Sophomore goalie Anna Hamid (Mineola/New Jersey Colonials) turned aside 14 shots.

Sarah Kosnaskie led Canton with a pair of goals. Halle McKinnon tallied a goal and an assist, Hannah Clement added a goal and Meaghan Best, Iida Laitinen and Brycelan Sunday each registered two assists. Goalie Sirena Alvarez made 30 saves.

After a scoreless first period, the Kangaroos built a 3-0 lead with their three second period goals. Kosnaskie scored at 4:57 and netted a power-play goal at 9:47. McKinnon added another power-play goal at the 17:59 mark.

The Red Dragons mounted a comeback effort in the third period. Gaffney scored on the power play at 8:16, and Hlasnick made it a 3-2 game at the 13:25 mark with her follow-up shot from the right side of the slot. Cortland pulled Hamid late for an extra skater, but Clement sealed the win with an empty-net goal after controlling the puck following a faceoff in Canton's defensive zone.
