Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Grunder Posts Triple-Double, McEvoy Nets 20, in 95-61 Win vs. Plattsburgh

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) recorded a triple-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists and Riley McEvoy (Homer) scored a career-best 20 points as SUNY Cortland defeated visiting Plattsburgh, 95-61, in SUNYAC men's basketball action.

Grunder's triple-double is possibly the first in Cortland's men's basketball history (UPDATE: no one in the program has accomplished the feat since the early 1980s, when full stats were first kept at Cortland; the NCAA officially began tracking assists in 1988-89 and steals and blocks in 1992-93.) Grunder is only the second SUNYAC player with a triple-double over the last 11 years; Brockport's Hamed Shamseldin had two triple-doubles during the 2017-18 season.

Grunder was 6-of-11 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. He had 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists at halftime as Cortland (9-10, 5-7 SUNYAC) built a 56-33 lead. He completed the triple-double with an assist that led to a McEvoy 3-pointer with 6:27 remaining that completed McEvoy's 20-point night. McEvoy finished 8-of-13 from the floor, 4-of-7 from 3-point range, and he tied his career high with eight rebounds. He hit all five of his shots, including two treys, in the first half.

Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) scored 18 points, his second highest point production of the season. He shot 7-of-10 from the field overall and 4-of-5 from the arc, and he also added four assists and three steals. AJ Lawton (Saratoga Springs) made 5-of-10 3-pointers in a 15-point effort, Sean Melvin (Valhalla) posted career bests of eight points and two blocks and tied his career high with four rebounds, and Kareem Lubin (South Blooming Grove/Washingtonville) finished with five assists and two blocks.

Kevin Tabb made four 3-pointers and finished with 24 points to lead Plattsburgh (2-17, 1-11 SUNYAC), Erik Salo scored 14 points and led the Cardinals with eight rebounds, and Franklin Infante had a team-high five assists.

Cortland finished the game with a season-best 18 3-pointers on 35 attempts (51 percent). The Red Dragons were shooting better than 70 percent for a good portion of the first half and ended the half at 63 percent overall and 67 percent (10-of-15) from the arc. Cortland never trailed in the game. The Red Dragons extended a 30-21 lead with 9:24 left in the half to 54-26 with 3:37 remaining. Cortland's lead held between 23 and 34 points the entire second half.

Cortland will host Potsdam Saturday at 4 p.m.
