Cortland Drops Neutral-Site Game to #15 St. Lawrence

CORNELIUS, N.C. – The nationally 15th-ranked St. Lawrence men's lacrosse team outscored Cortland, 8-1, in the second quarter to build a 9-3 halftime lead and earned a 14-8 win versus the Red Dragons Saturday afternoon in a non-conference neutral-site game in Cornelius, N.C. Cortland fell to 2-4, while the Saints improved to 5-1.

Graduate student Zak Jones (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach), senior Pat Doyen (Miller Place) and junior Tyler Starrett (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) each netted two goals for the Red Dragons.Graduate student Brandon Stiles (Mastic/Eastport-South Manor) tallied a goal and an assist, senior Troy Morris (Long Beach) scored a goal and junior Jake DiBenedetto (Lynbrook) recorded an assist.

Sophomore goalie Travis Wagner (Penfield) made 16 saves for the Red Dragons. Senior Justin Wainwright (Homer) registered two caused turnovers and two ground balls, and graduate student Jacob Rivers (Homer) and junior Jake Smeader (Hamburg) collected three ground balls apiece.

Judge Murphy scored four goals, Chris Jordan finished with three goals and three assists and Mark Mahoney scored a game-high seven points on two goals and five assists to lead the St. Lawrence offense. Ben Murtagh and Stew Hutchinson chipped in with a goal and an assist, and Josh Huiatt, Ben Hutchinson and Zack Corsi each added a goal.

Goalie William Helm turned aside six shots in 57:48. Michael Marinello did not register a save in 2:12. Padraic Condon won 15-of-18 faceoffs and scooped up six ground balls. Joe Scarfi caused three turnovers, Guthrie Little contributed seven ground balls and two caused turnovers and Jack Gorman secured three ground balls.
