#24 Cortland Defeats Colonials, 17-8

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 24th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team held Western Connecticut St. scoreless for 23:51 seconds spanning the second through fourth quarters and pulled away for a 17-8 victory Friday afternoon in non-conference action at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 2-4 with the win, while the Colonials dropped their second straight and fell to 5-2.

Senior Hannah Lorenzen (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Cortland offense. Sophomore Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) finished with a game-high six points on three goals and three assists. Senior Lauren Hopsicker (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) tallied two goals and three assists, senior Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) recorded two goals and one assist and junior Rachel Janis (Laurel/Mattituck) netted two goals. Graduate student Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville), senior Shelby Meduski (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach), sophomore Danielle Regan (Brewster) and freshman Gabby Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) each scored a goal.

Graduate student Paige Potter (Cortland) stopped three first-half shots in goal for the Red Dragons. Lorenzen won three draw controls, junior Madelyn Czyz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) secured three draws and caused two turnovers and sophomore Julie Kadletz (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) scooped up four ground balls.

Senior Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, CT/New Fairfield) and sophomore Vicky Gracy (Bethel, CT) produced all of Western Connecticut St.'s offense. DeMarsico totaled four goals and an assist, and Gracy notched four goals.

Junior goalie Anna Schipf (Babylon) registered 10 saves. Gracy won six draws, DeMarsico secured four draws and junior Meghan Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) finished with four draws and three caused turnovers.

The teams split the first four goals before a three-goal Cortland run gave the Red Dragons a 5-2 lead late in the first quarter. Gracy's first goal of the game cut the Colonials' deficit to 5-3 after 15 minutes of play. Hopsicker made it a 6-3 score before back-to-back goals from Hoeffner put Cortland ahead 8-3 at the 6:04 mark of the second quarter. Gracy netted her second goal at 5:23, but the Colonials would not score again until the fourth quarter as the Red Dragons pulled away.

Cashman and Keech netted goals to close the first half with Cortland up, 10-4. The lead grew to 14-4 after three quarters as Keech, Cashman, Janis and Hopsicker each scored. Gracy ended the Western Connecticut St. scoring drought with her goal at 11:22 of the fourth quarter. After Janis gave Cortland back its 10-goal advantage with her second goal to make it a 15-5 game, the Colonials netted three of the last four goals for the 17-8 final.
