Red Dragons Fall to #1 RIT in Non-Conference Action

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The nationally top-ranked and defending Division III national championship RIT men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 10-1 first-quarter lead in defeating Cortland, 21-6, Wednesday night in non-conference action. The Red Dragons fell to 3-6, while the Tigers improved to 9-0.

Senior Pat Doyen (Miller Place) led Cortland offensively with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Colton Smith (South Bristol/Penn Yan Academy) netted two goals, graduate student Zak Jones (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) and junior Tyler Starrett (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) each scored a goal and senior Dante Yacavone (Homer) collected an assist.

Junior Matt Stento (Bethlehem) started in goal for the Red Dragons, making three saves in 12:04. Sophomore Travis Wagner (Penfield) turned aside 10 shots in 47:56. Doyen added three ground balls, and senior Dominick Natale (Homer) scooped up four ground balls.

Thirteen different players scored goals for RIT, led by Quinn Commandant who tallied four goals and three assists. Luke Pilcher recorded three goals and one assist, Marley Angus finished with two goals and two assists, Spencer Bell had two goals and one assist and Clifford Gaston notched two goals. Ryan Barnable and John Mozrall each chipped in with a goal and assist, six others netted one goal and Ryan Rosenblum registered three assists.

Goalie Drew Hutchison made seven saves through three quarters. Kyle Burbank stopped three shots in the fourth quarter. Jimmy Spillane won 9-of-12 faceoffs and collected five ground balls, Carson Taylor won 7-of-8 faceoffs and secured five ground balls and Nick Farrell was successful on 6-of-10 faceoffs.
