Red Dragons Hold Off Oswego, 16-12, in SUNYAC Action

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Sophomore Colton Smith (South Bristol/Penn Academy) matched his career high with five goals and senior Dante Yacavone (Homer) tallied three goals and one assist to become the 28th Red Dragon to reach 100 career goals as the Cortland men's lacrosse team held off Oswego, 16-12, on the road Wednesday afternoon in SUNYAC play.

The Red Dragons improved to 10-6 overall and 6-0 in the conference and have clinched a home semifinal game in the league playoffs with one game remaining versus Geneseo on Saturday at the Stadium Complex. The winner of that game earns the top seed in the SUNYAC Tournament. The Lakers dropped to 8-5 and 3-3 but still hold the fourth and final playoff spot.

Senior Troy Morris (Long Beach) matched Smith's five points with two goals and three assists, and junior Tyler Starrett (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) netted three goals for Cortland. Graduate students Zak Jones (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) and Jacob Rivers (Homer) recorded one goal and one assist, senior Kyle Boden (Wading River/Shoreham-Wading River) scored a goal, graduate student Brandon Stiles (Mastic/Eastport-South Manor) registered two assists and seniors Christopher Dovi (Cortland) and Justin Wainwright (Homer) chipped in with one assist apiece.

Sophomore goalie Travis Wagner (Penfield) turned aside 10 shots for the Red Dragons. Freshman Owen Neubauer (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) won 16-of-27 faceoffs and secured seven ground balls. Yacavone added five ground balls and two caused turnovers, freshman Alex Thrasher (Vestal) secured four ground balls and Rivers caused two turnovers.

Max Brodman led the Oswego offense with four goals. Gavin Elston tallied two goals and three assists, and Cameron Tallman also netted two goals. Weston Gray finished with a goal and two assists, Corey O'Connor and Jack Delany each recorded one goal and one assist and Ryan Eccles notched a goal.

Goalie Aiden Kenyon registered 17 saves and six ground balls. Logan Prescott won 12 faceoffs and scooped up five ground balls, Tyler Scoro collected four ground balls and Evan Coleman caused three turnovers.
