#19 Cortland Advances to SUNYAC Final with 21-2 Win vs. Oneonta

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 19th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team scored the last 18 goals of the game while holding Oneonta scoreless over the final 48 minutes, 44 seconds in earning a 21-2 victory in the semifinals of the SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament Friday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The home Red Dragons won their 13th consecutive game, improving to 14-4 on the season, and host the winner of Geneseo versus Brockport in the title game on Saturday at 1 p.m. The visiting Red Dragons fell to 8-9.

Senior Lauren Hopsicker (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led the Cortland offense with seven points on five goals and two assists. Freshman Gabby Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) netted four goals, and graduate student Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) and sophomore Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) each tallied three goals and two assists with all of Cashman's points coming in the first half.

Junior Rachel Janis (Laurel/Mattituck) finished with two goals and an assist, senior Hannah Keech (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) tallied one goal and two assists, and senior Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) and juniors Sydney Stamboly (Rome/Rome Free Academy) and Matisyn Schaut (Syracuse/West Genesee) netted one goal apiece. Junior Madelyn Czyz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and sophomore Danielle Regan (Brewster) each chipped in with an assist.

Graduate student Paige Potter (Cortland) turned aside eight shots in goal for the host Red Dragons. Hopsicker collected five ground balls and caused two turnovers, sophomore Julie Kadletz (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) finished with four ground balls and two turnovers, and Hoeffner added six draw controls.

Junior Megan Foiles (Pearl River) scored both of Oneonta's goals in the first quarter. Sophomore Courtney Gallagher (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) started in goal, making eight saves in 46 minutes before giving way to freshman Julia Hawkins (East Greenbush/Columbia), who stopped two shots in the final 14 minutes.

Sophomore Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) collected three ground balls, sophomore Marissa Evans (Jamesville/LaFayette) recorded three draws and two ground balls, and senior Rachel Morris (East Greenbush/Columbia) won four draws.

Prior to the game, Morris received the SUNYAC's Elite 20 Award for having the highest grade-point average among all players at the championship site.
