HAVERFORD, PA. – Cortland posted two victories during Day 2 of the Haverford College Women's Volleyball Ford Invitational, knocking off nationally 19th-ranked Susquehanna in four sets and rallying from a two-set deficit for a five-set win over the host school. The Red Dragons improved to 5-1 on the season after going 2-1 at the tournament.
Cortland defeated Susquehanna, 21-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-20.
Zoe Staats (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson) led Cortland with 13 kills and six blocks and
Alexa Guedez (Rye/Rye Neck) had 10 kills with just one error in 22 attempts (.409) along with two aces and three blocks.
Allie Sturgess (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) added seven kills,
Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) had 21 assists and three aces, and
Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) led the team with 28 digs.
Kody Dillon, Rosina Esposito and Ryan Roris had 11 kills each for Susquehanna (4-2), which advanced to the third round of last year's NCAA playoffs.
The Red Dragons finished the day with a thrilling 21-25, 15-25, 25-23, 25-23, 17-15 win over Haverford. Staats led Cortland with 18 kills and added five blocks, Guedez totaled a career-high 15 kills with just one error in 33 attempts (.424) and had four blocks, and Sturgess finished with 10 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Staats and Sturgess were named to the all-tournament team.
Emma Reilly (Massapequa Park) led Cortland with eight blocks. Martens had a team-best 27 digs,
Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) dished out 18 assists and served four aces and
Megan McMahon (Ballston Spa) had 17 assists.
Eliana Brown, Taylor Jones and Claire Jordan led Haverford (4-3) with 12 kills each. The Fords were an NCAA second-round team last year.
Cortland trailed 22-19 in the third set and was three points from being swept before scoring five straight points to take a 24-22 lead. Sturgess and Guedez put down kills during that run, and two points later Guedez had a kill to give Cortland the set.
The Red Dragons trailed 20-12 in the fourth set before mounting another comeback. An 8-1 run, sparked by two Staats kills, pulled Cortland within one at 21-20. After a Haverford point, Cortland used a Staats kill, a Haverford error and a Wittman ace to take a 23-22 lead. With the set tied at 23, Cortland rattled off the final two points on kills by Guedez and
Giovanna Rossi (Nichols/Tioga Central).
The fifth set featured 11 ties. Cortland fought off a Haverford match point at 14-13 on a Staats kill, and another kill by Staats put the Red Dragons up 15-14. The Fords' Jadyn Elliott tied the set with a kill, but Guedez sealed the Cortland victory with back-to-back kills.
