Red Dragons Eighth in Highly Regarded Field at Hamilton Invitational

Kristina Visniesky recorded an 86 each day, including six pars and a birdie Saturday and nine pars Sunday
NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. – The Cortland women's golf team finished in eighth place out of 14 schools at the Hamilton College Fall Invitational Saturday and Sunday at the Yahnundasis Golf Club. The tournament field featured six schools either ranked or also receiving votes in the Division III preseason national rankings.
 
Cortland finished with a two-day score of 676, carding a 341 on Saturday and improving to a 335 Sunday. The Red Dragons finished 22 strokes better than ninth-place Wesleyan (Conn.) and 18 behind seventh-place Ithaca. Nationally top-ranked Emory won the team title with a 600 (302-298), three strokes ahead of 12th-ranked Amherst (306-297-603). Hamilton (also receiving votes), fifth-ranked Williams, 22nd-ranked Middlebury and eighth-ranked NYU rounded out the top six.
 
Claudia Winterberg (Harrisburg, NC/Hickory Ridge) led Cortland with a tie for 32nd place in a field of 78 golfers. She registered an 82 Saturday and an 81 Sunday on the par-73 course for a 163. Her opening round featured three birdies and seven pars and her second round included 10 pars and one birdie. Emory's Sharon Munn was tournament medalist with a 145 (73-72).
 
Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Williamsville East) placed 40th with a two-day score of 167 (84-83). She notched two birdies and eight pars Saturday and nine pars and a birdie Sunday. Kristina Visniesky (Buffalo/Orchard Park) tied for 45th place with a 172 (86 each day). She had 15 pars and a birdie over her 36 holes during the weekend's action.
 
Sophie Oristian (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) and Sarah Wiggins (Carson City, NV/Carson) tied for 47th place with total scores of 174. Oristian finished with an 89 Saturday and 85 Sunday. Wiggins, an individual entry, posted an 84 Saturday and a 90 Sunday. Rachel Curatolo (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill), also an individual entry, tied for 52nd place with a 181 (93-88) and Alivia Waldron (Plattsburgh/Saranac) finished 55th with a 182 (93-89).
 
Cortland heads to Scotch Plains, N.J., next weekend for the NYU Invitational
