WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. – The Cortland women's golf team finished in ninth place at the Williams College Championship, held Saturday and Sunday at the Taconic Golf Club. 
 
The Red Dragons won the "classic" division of Williams' tournament last year but stepped up this year into the more competitive "championship" division of the tournament. The nine-team field featured five schools ranked in the top 25 nationally in Division III along with two others who received votes in the latest poll. 
 
Nationally 14th-ranked NYU won the team title with a 610 (304-306), followed by ninth-ranked Amherst at 617 (307-310) and 12th-ranked Williams at 621 (312-309). Cortland posted a two-day score of 696 with a 345 on Saturday and a 351 on Sunday. The tournament also featured Middlebury and Hamilton, each tied for 24th nationally, and Christopher Newport and Wellesley, each in the receiving votes category, along with Cortland and Ithaca. 
 
Claudia Winterberg (Harrisburg, NC/Hickory Ridge) was Cortland's top finisher in a tie for 35th place out of 60 golfers. She posted an 84 Saturday and an 81 Sunday on the par-71 layout for a 165. Jacqueline Lu of Williams was tournament medalist with a 146 (71-75). 
 
Sarah Wiggins (Carson City, NV/Carson), as an individual entry, tied for 46th place with a 169 (87-82). Sophie Oristian (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) placed 53rd (83-91-174) and Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Williamsville East) tied for 55th (87-89-176). 
 
Cortland will compete in two separate one-day tournaments next weekend to close out the fall season. Both tournaments are being conducted by the Northeast Women's Golf Conference (NWGC), but the official league championship will not be until the spring. The NWGC Fall Classic will be Saturday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m. and the NWGC Fall Invitational will be Sunday, Oct. 2 at 10 a.m., both at McGregor Links Country Club in Wilton.
