Cortland Runner-up at Season-Opening St. Lawrence Invitational

Amanda Gaffney posted Cortland's best round of the tournament with a career-best 78 on Sunday
CANTON, N.Y. – The Cortland women's golf team opened the fall portion of its 2022-23 season with a second-place finish at the St. Lawrence Invitational Saturday and Sunday at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course.
 
The Red Dragons finished with a two-day score of 668, just five strokes behind team champion Ithaca and easily ahead of third-place Utica (758). Cortland trailed Ithaca by just one stroke, 336-337, after Saturday's action.
 
Claudia Winterberg (Harrisburg, NC/Hickory Ridge) and Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Williamsville East) were Cortland's top two finishers in second and third place, respectively. Winterberg posted an 80 on Saturday and an 82 on Sunday for a 162, seven strokes behind medalist Rheanna Decrow of Ithaca. Gaffney had an 86 Saturday and then registered Cortland's best round of the weekend with a career-best 78 Sunday for a total of 164. Winterberg recorded 11 pars and a birdie on the first day and nine pars on the second day. Gaffney flipped that script with nine pars on Saturday and 11 pars and a birdie Sunday.
 
Sarah Wiggins (Carson City, NV/Carson), in her collegiate debut, tied for fifth place as an individual entry. Her round of 82 on Saturday featured 10 pars, and she recorded seven pars on Sunday on her way to an 88 to finish with a two-day total of 170.
 
Sophie Oristian (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) tied for seventh place with a score of 171. She scored an 86 on Saturday with a birdie and four pars and carded an 85 Sunday with seven pars. Alivia Waldron (Plattsburgh/Saranac) and Kristina Visniesky (Buffalo/Orchard Park) tied for 10th place with scores of 173. Waldron parred six holes Saturday and posted an 87 and had a birdie and four pars en route to an 86 Sunday. Visniesky tied her career-best score with an 85 on Saturday and had an 88 Sunday. She parred six holes the first day and eight the second day. Rachel Curatolo (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill), as an individual entry, finished with a 92 Saturday and a career-best 83 Sunday for a 175. Her first round featured five pars and her second round included a birdie and seven pars.
 
Cortland will compete at the Hamilton Invitational in New Hartford next Saturday and Sunday.
