Missed Chances Lead to 0-0 Tie vs. Clarkson

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Despite holding a commanding 22-8 advantage in shots and creating several quality scoring chances, the Cortland women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie versus Clarkson Wednesday night in non-conference action at a wet and slick Holloway Field.

Sophomore goalie Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) made three saves in posting her first career shutout for the Red Dragons (1-0-2). Sophomore goalie Molly DiCaprio (Guilderland) registered seven saves, and the Golden Knights (2-0-1) also recorded two team saves.

Cortland generated four excellent scoring chances in the first half but couldn't get on the scoreboard. Freshman Hannah Blacher (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) made the first bid to give Cortland the lead, but her uncontested shot on a loose ball after a corner kick in the 27th minute just went over the crossbar. Graduate student Jaden Galluzzo (Commack) then had three opportunities. In the 35th minute, her 16-yard shot slid wide of the left post. With nine minutes left in the first half, she blasted a 20-yard shot over the crossbar, and DiCaprio made a save on Galluzzo's penalty kick at the 2:30 mark.

The second half proved to be similar to the opening 45 minutes as the Red Dragons controlled much of the play. In the 52nd minute, DiCaprio denied a chance by Cortland junior Simone Neivel (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) with a leaping save at the upper left corner. In the 82nd minute, DiCaprio again stoned Neivel with a great save on a shot labeled for the upper right corner. Then, with time winding down, Galluzzo was sent on a breakaway. She deked DiCaprio and cut to her left deep in the box, but her shot toward what was an empty goal was denied at the left post by a Clarkson defender to keep the game scoreless.
