Red Dragons Can't Overcome Slow Start in 81-65 Loss to Oswego

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Oswego raced out to a 21-point lead 13 minutes into the game and the Lakers defeated host Cortland, 81-65, in a SUNYAC men's basketball matchup.
 
Oswego won its ninth straight game to improve to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC. Cortland fell to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the conference.
 
Oswego finished 11-of-23 from 3-point range and shot 48 percent from the field overall. Jeremiah Sparks led the Lakers with 21 points, including three 3-pointers, and added four assists. Devin Green was 4-of-7 from the arc and finished with 16 points and a team-high five assists. Cartier Bowman scored 10 points and led the Lakers with nine rebounds.
 
Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) paced Cortland with 20 points and 12 rebounds. He shot 8-of-16 from the field. Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) finished with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists, Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) hit 3-of-6 3-pointers and ended with 11 points, and Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) scored 10 points. The Red Dragons shot 42 percent from the field overall and 38 percent (8-of-21) from the arc.
 
Oswego used a 16-2 run to extend a 20-13 lead to 36-15 over a six-minute span in the first half. The Lakers led by as many as 23 points before going into the halftime locker room up 44-24. Cortland closed to within 15 points at 46-31 in the first four minutes of the second half but got no closer until pulling within 14 points at 76-62 with 1:26 left.
 
Cortland travels to New Paltz on Friday, Jan. 20 and Oneonta on Saturday, Jan. 21, for league contests.
