PITTSTON, PA. – The Cortland men's hockey team scored two third-period goals to break a 2-2 tie and defeated King's College, 4-2, in non-conference action Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 10-6-1. The Monarchs dropped to 3-9-1.
Senior
Trevor Veneklase (Brentwood, TN/Seahawks Hockey Club) led Cortland with two goals and an assist. Senior
Nick Grupp (Depew/Brantford 99ers) and junior
Geordan Buffoline (Ballston Spa/Vermont Lumberjacks) each netted goals. Freshman
Colby Seitz (Eden/Corpus Christi IceRays) collected two assists, and juniors
Nate Berke (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and
John Kuhl (Essex Fells, NJ/Boston Jr. Rangers) each recorded an assist. Freshman goalie
Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Rey, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) made 27 saves in his first collegiate start.
Kent Lee and Aaron Frenkel scored goals for King's, while four others each picked up an assist. Goalie Tyler Sayger stopped 43 shots.
King's took a 1-0 lead at 13:13 of the opening period on Lee's goal after a Cortland turnover. Veneklase tied the game just 28 seconds later with a one-time shot deep on the left side off a pass from Seitz across the mouth of the crease.
The Monarchs went back in front when Frenkel scored from the left side of the right circle midway through the second period. Buffoline tied the game at 2-2 at 14:55 of the period with a low shot from the slot.
Grupp netted the game winner at 8:50 of the third period with the teams skating four aside, scoring on a wrist shot from the left circle off Veneklase's feed. Veneklase completed the scoring with his seventh goal of the season at the 12:34 mark on a shot from the right side of the slot for the 4-2 final.
