WILLIAMSPORT, PA. – The Cortland wrestling team won three out of its five matches and finished in sixth place out of 16 team at the Budd Whitehill National Duals Friday and Saturday at Lycoming College.
Cortland (4-7) began action Friday with a 2-1 mark in Group A to earn a spot in the "5-8 group" with wins over Wilkes, 28-21, and Wesleyan, 23-15, followed by a 29-10 loss to nationally sixth-ranked Stevens Institute. On Saturday, Cortland won its opening match versus York (Pa.), 22-18, before losing in the fifth-place match to Washington & Lee, 40-4.

J.C. Cardenas (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) at 133 pounds by technical fall in 6:43 (23-8), a 21-6 technical fall in 4:22 by
Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) at 149 pounds, a pin by
Nick Ross (Woodstock/Onteora) in 1:48 at 157 pounds, an 11-5 overtime decision by
Jaden Datz (Pittsburgh, PA/Southmoreland) at 165 pounds, a pin in 4:24 by
Steven Gazzillo (New Windsor/Cornwall) at 184 pounds, and a 15-10 decision by
Demitreus Henry (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) at 197 pounds.
Cortland earned six victories in its win over Wesleyan, highlighted by
Adam Barker's (Holbrook/Sachem North) 8-2 win over nationally 14th-ranked Marco Gaita at 174 pounds.
Cody Merwin (Walton) started with a 16-5 major decision at 125 pounds, followed by a pin by Cardneas at 133 and an 8-7 decision by
Shane Walczyk (Eden) at 141 and an 8-5 decision by Centrone at 149. Henry earned the Red Dragons' other win with a 15-5 major decision at 197.
Three Red Dragons earned wins against Stevens. Centrone won in overtime, 5-3, at 149, Gazzillo posted an 11-2 major decision at 184, and Henry won, 5-3, at 197.
In the Saturday opener versus York, the match was tied at 6-6 through four bouts, with Cardenas winning, 3-0, at 133 and Centrone victorious, 12-6, at 149. York took a brief 9-6 lead after the 157-pound match, but Cortland answered with three straight wins, all with bonus points, to take control. Datz won by a 13-4 major decision at 165,
Hunter Hughes (Selden/Newfield) pinned his opponent in 2:26 at 174, and Gazzillo pinned his foe in 1:19 at 184.
Cortland won only one bout in the fifth-place match against Washington & Lee. Cardenas registered a 9-1 major decision at 133 to give the Red Dragons an early 4-3 lead.
Cortland travels to RIT next Saturday for the New York State Intercollegiate Open.
