WHEATON, ILL. – Four of Cortland's eight wrestlers placed in the top eight of their weight classes, led by Demitreus Henry's (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) title at 197 pounds, as the Red Dragons finished ninth out of 32 schools at the two-day Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational. 
 
Cortland scored 72 team points, just two behind both Ohio Northern and Wisconsin-Whitewater and five behind Chicago. North Central won the team title with 136 points. 
 
In addition to Henry's 197-pound title, Brian Torres (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) finished fourth at 184 pounds, Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) placed fifth at 149 pounds and Cody Merwin (Walton) was seventh at 125 pounds. 
 
Henry, ranked 11th nationally in his weight class, opened the tournament with two pins and a 7-3 decision. He defeated Wheaton's Jackson Punzel in the semifinals, 7-5, then won in the finals versus Otterbein's Jarrod Setliff, 4-2, on a takedown 30 seconds into the first sudden-victory overtime period. 
 
Torres finished 5-2 at 184 pounds. He began with a major decision and a pin before losing his next match, 11-3. Torres bounced back to win three straight bouts, one by pin, before dropping a 3-2 decision in the third place match to Gavin Layman of Ohio Northern, with the difference a riding time point. 
Centrone registered a 5-2 record at 149 pounds. He won his first two matches, one by a major decision, then lost his third match. He won his first two matches in the consolation bracket, followed by an 8-2 loss, before closing the tournament with a 9-5 decision over Concordia-Moorhead's Jacob Prunty in the fifth place match. 
 
Merwin won four of his six matches at 125 pounds. After a pin and a decision, Merwin lost in the quarterfinals, 9-2. He won two of his final three matches, capped by a 3-1, sudden-victory win over Shelton Chastain of Ozarks in the seventh place match on a takedown 55 seconds into overtime. 
 
Two other Cortland wrestlers posted multiple wins at the tournament. Nick Ross (Woodstock/Onteora) was 3-2 with a pin at 157 pounds and Jaden Datz (Pittsburgh, PA/Southmoreland) went 2-2 at 165 pounds. One of Datz's losses was a 5-4 decision to nationally eighth-ranked Ryan Vender of Wisconsin-Whitewater. 
 
Cortland will send wrestlers to the Jamestown Community College Open on Sunday.
