JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Sophomore
Kyle Klein (Miller Place) captured the 157-pound title and three other Cortland wrestlers earned top-four finishes at the Jamestown Open. There was no team scoring at the event, which was hosted by Jamestown Community College.
Klein finished with a 4-0 record at the event and raised his season record to 22-9. Freshman
Gabe Lynch (Theresa/Indian River) earned a runner-up finish at 157 pounds, while freshman
Devin Walker (Brentwood) and junior
Steven Gazzillo (New Windsor/Cornwall) each secured third-place finishes.
Klein opened with a narrow 1-0 decision versus Kaelon Lawson-West of Hiram to advance to the quarterfinals where he earned a 7-5 sudden-victory decision over unattached Sam Partain. In the semifinals, Klein pinned St. John Fisher's Trevor Sheehan in 1:28 before securing the title with a pin of Lynch in 1:45 in the finals.
Lynch reached the championship bout with a pin of George Racz of Alfred State in 2:08 in the quarterfinals and a 19-9 major decision over Ithaca's Joseph Averill in the semifinals.
After dropping his first bout, Walker responded with four straight wins to earn his third-place finish at 133 pounds. He registered a 16-4 major decision over Constantine Gehring of Gannon, followed by pins against Ohio Wesleyan's Jimmy Baumann and Cortland's
Joey Powers (Port Byron/Dana L. West). Walker was awarded his third-place finish with a medical forfeit victory.
Gazzillo also ran off four straight wins to secure his third-place showing at 184 pounds. After an opening setback, he decisioned Alex Christy of Jamestown, 7-4, and followed with a 10-3 decision against Desmon Perry of Ohio Wesleyan. Gazzillo then pinned Joel Nivar of Niagara Community College in 2:58 and earned his third-place finish with a medical forfeit win.
Sophomore
Dan Cassera (Setauket/Ward Melville) posted a 2-0 record at 165 pounds before medical forfeiting his final two bouts. He earned a 4-2 decision over Ithaca's John Hecht and pinned Cortez Henderson of Niagara Community College in 5:01 to reach the semifinals. At 141 pounds, freshman
Shane Walczyk (Eden) posted a 3-2 record that included a pin of Hiram's Alex Savering in in 4:06.
