Red Dragons Split Two Matches at Day 2 of NWCA National Duals

Hunter Hughes won by pin in 51 seconds versus Wilkes
LOUISVILLE, KY. – Cortland split two matches during the second day of competition at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals at the Kentucky Expo Center. Competing in the 17th-to-24th-place bracket, Cortland opened Saturday's action with a 32-13 win over Wilkes before losing to 22nd-ranked NYU, 27-22. 
 
Cortland officially finished in 22nd place in the 24-team tournament that featured numerous nationally ranked teams. Augsburg (Minn.) was the team champion. 
 
Cortland won seven out of 10 matches versus Wilkes, five of which earned the Red Dragons bonus points. J.C. Cardenas (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus), ranked fourth nationally at 133 pounds, recorded a pin in 2:39, and Cahal Donovan (Marietta/Marcellus), ranked 11th at 141 pounds, won his match by a 4-0 decision.

Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) followed with an 18-7 major decision at 149 pounds and Kyle Klein (Miller Place) won, 3-2, at 157 pounds, with riding time providing the decisive point. Hunter Hughes (Selden/Newfield) pinned his opponent in 51 seconds at 165 pounds, Pat Ross (Woodstock/Onteora) registered a pin in 4:20 at 174 pounds, and Steven Gazzillo (New Windsor/Cornwall) won by an 11-1 major decision at 184 pounds. 
 
Against NYU, Cortland led 16-0 after four matches before the Violets won the next five bouts, three by pin, to take a 27-16 lead. Cody Merwin (Walton) won at 125 pounds, 6-5, with a penalty point and a takedown in the closing moments. Cardenas won by technical fall, 18-2 in 6:50, Donovan earned a 6-5 win at 141 pounds, and Centrone won by technical fall, 27-11 in 5:54. Cortland's final points came via a Dylan Houseknecht (Odessa/Odessa-Montour) forfeit win at 285 pounds. 
 
Cortland will travel to Lycoming College in Pennsylvania for the Budd Whitehill Duals Jan. 13-14.
