CORTLAND, N.Y. – Juniors
Gianna Trunfio (Clinton) and
Jamie Snyder (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) combined to score every goal as the nationally 15th-ranked Cortland field hockey team defeated Hartwick, 7-1, Wednesday night in non-conference action at the Stadium Complex White Field.
Trunfio tallied four goals, while Snyder finished with three goals and one assist for the Red Dragons (11-1). The last time Cortland had two players record hat tricks in a game was Oct. 26, 2016, when Gabby Stein and Megan O'Brien each scored three goals in an 8-2 home victory versus St. Lawrence.
Junior
Sydney Reinisch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and sophomore
Molly Miller (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) each recorded an assist for Cortland. Sophomore goalie
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) made two saves.
Senior Julie Ruzzi (High Falls/Rondout Valley) scored her team-high 12th goal of the season for the Hawks (7-3). Senior goalie Ashley Luppens (Wading River/Shoreham-Wading River) registered 16 saves.
After a scoreless first quarter in which Cortland dominated play with an 8-0 shot advantage and a 6-0 advantage in corners, Trunfio tallied her first goal at the 26:56 mark on a diving deflection off a pass from Snyder, and the Red Dragons took a 1-0 lead into the half.
The Cortland offense took control of the game with four goals in less than a five-minute span in the third quarter. Trunfio scored her second goal at 38:48 on another diving deflection, this time off Reinisch's cross from the left. Snyder then made it a 3-0 game at 41:29 with the first of her three unassisted goals, carrying through the Hartwick defense on a restart and beating Luppens with a hard shot.
Trunfio then tallied back-to-back goals exactly one minute apart for a 5-0 Red Dragon lead. She deflected a pass from Miller over Luppens at 42:33 and scored on a rebound after a Luppens save at 43:33. Snyder collected her second goal of the game 1:25 into the fourth quarter on a play similar to her first goal off a restart. Ruzzi broke up the shutout bid 53 seconds later when she carried into the circle and sent a shot off Morgan that trickled over the goal line. Snyder completed the scoring with a rebound goal at 49:08 after another save by Luppens for the 7-1 final.
