OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to nine games and clinched the top seed in the upcoming SUNYAC playoffs with a 3-0 victory at Oswego Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons await the winner of the New Paltz and Oswego first-round game at home in the semifinals on Wedensday, Nov. 1.
Graduate student
Bryn Thompson (Hopewell Junction/Arlington) scored her first goal of the season and added an assist for Cortland (9-2-5, 5-0-4 SUNYAC). Seniors
Bella Casucci (Smithtown/Smithtown West) and
Simone Neivel (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) each tallied a goal, and senior
Kayla Valerioti (Oakdale/Connetquot) chipped in with an assist.
Junior goalie
Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) made three saves in recording her seventh shutout of the season for the Red Dragons. Goalie Perri Anderson stopped four shots in 84:28, and Haley Muehl registered one save in 5:32 for the Lakers (6-3-6, 3-2-4 SUNYAC).
Casucci scored what proved to be the game winner in the 14th minute off an assist from Thompson. Just under two minutes later Thompson scored off a corner kick serve by Valerioti for a 2-0 Cortland lead. Neivel added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute on an unassisted effort for the 3-0 final.
