Cortland Stays Perfect in SUNYAC After Sweep at Buffalo State

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-17 win at Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 18-3 overall and are 7-0 in conference play with home matches remaining Friday versus Geneseo and Saturday against Brockport to close out the league schedule.

Allie Sturgess (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) led the Red Dragons with 14 kills and a .385 attack percentage and added four blocks. Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) totaled eight kills, two aces and eight digs and Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck) had six kills and four blocks. Giovanna Rossi (Nichols/Tioga) ended with five kills and four blocks.

Lexy Bloss (York, PA/Dallastown Area) led the Red Dragons with six blocks. Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) recorded 20 assists and two aces and Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) had 14 assists and eight digs. Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) led the team with 16 digs.

Buffalo State (13-11, 3-4 SUNYAC) was led by Samantha Coakley with nine kills and Eden Harrison and Ella Wittman with seven kills each. Karlie Shaffer notched 19 assists and Adi Vergara had 14 digs.

The match at Buffalo State was designated as a fundraiser to support the P.U.N.T. (Perseverance, Understanding, Need, and Teamwork) Pediatric Cancer Collaborative, a foundation that has affected the lives of countless children and their families throughout the Western New York area. Inspired by the battle against bilateral Wilms' tumors that Jack, the cousin of the Wittmans (Cortland's Meadow and Buffalo State's Ella), has taken on, the teams spearheaded the formation of this event to raise both awareness and money to support the cause.
