Cortland Advances to SUNYAC Title Game with 4-0 Win vs. Brockport

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 14th-ranked Cortland field hockey team advanced to the championship game of the SUNYAC tournament for the sixth straight season with a 4-0 semifinal win over visiting Brockport.
Cortland (16-1), the tournament's top seed, will host second-seeded New Paltz in the finals 1 p.m. Saturday. New Paltz defeated third-seeded Geneseo, 2-1, in Wednesday's other semifinal at New Paltz. Brockport wrapped up its season with an 11-7 record.

Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) and Gianna Trunfio (Clinton) each scored twice for the Red Dragons and Sydney Reinisch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) registered two assists. Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) made one save for her eighth shutout of the season. Cortland outshot the Golden Eagles, 28-2, and earned all 14 of the game's penalty corners. Brockport goalie Ella Buchanan finished with 14 saves.

Ettere opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 10:07 into the contest as she dribbled across the circle through traffic and blasted a shot from the right side. Trunfio made it 2-0 with 9:36 remaining before halftime. She took a long lead pass from Reinisch and drove in unchecked toward the goal. Buchanan initially stopped Trunfio's shot, but the ball trickled behind her and into the cage.

Cortland added two insurance goals over the final 10 minutes. Ettere took a pass from Jamie Snyder (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) and scored from the center of the circle with 9:48 remaining. With 2:11 left and snow coming down for the second time during the game, Trunfio converted a lead pass from Reinisch and eluded Buchanan for the goal to conclude the scoring.
