Cortland Uses Second-Half Surge to Defeat Bates, 81-67

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – Maurice Kearney earned his first collegiate head coaching victory as Cortland defeated Bates, 81-67, in the third-place game of Western New England University's Tip Off Tournament.

Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) led Cortland (1-2) with 21 points and also grabbed six rebounds. He made 3-of-4 3-pointers. Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) hit 7-of-11 shots and finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea) chipped in with 11 points, four rebounds and two steals. Jaylen Warmack (Utica/Utica Notre Dame) ended with nine points, four rebounds and four assists, Gerrad Beaubrun (Baldwin) made 4-of-6 shots for eight points, and Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) added six points, three assists and four rebounds.

Bates (0-4) was led by Peter Psyhogeos with 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting. He also totaled seven rebounds. Grant Nadeau and Elliott Cravitz each scored 14 points and Stephen Ward pulled down 13 rebounds. Marc Begin II dished out five assists.

Bates led 41-40 at halftime after neither team held a lead of more than six points during the period. Bates was still up by one, 51-50, with 13:40 left, and Cortland held a 55-54 lead before going on a decisive 12-0 run from the 9:24 to 6:40 marks. Linehan started the run with a 3-pointer. Coston hit a shot and got fouled. He missed the free thrown, but Beaubrun controlled the rebound and Coston eventually worked for a layup to make it 62-54. Beaubrun's layup and Lubin's two free throws closed out the run, and Cortland led by double figures the rest of the way.

Cortland shot 48 percent from the field, including 56 percent in the second half. The Red Dragons made 10-of-26 3-pointers (39 percent). Bates shot 56 percent in the first half but only 27 in the second to finish at 39 percent. The Bobcats made 10-of-23 treys (44 percent), 6-of-9 in the first half.
