CORTLAND, N.Y. – Hamilton outscored Cortland in the fourth quarter, 12-4, to break open a tight contest and the visiting Continentals defeated the Red Dragons, 61-49, in non-league women's basketball action.
Cortland (1-2) was led by
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois), who posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and also blocked two shots.
Jackie Funk (Penfield) scored a team-high 12 points,
Abby Wilkinson (Cato/Bishop Grimes) scored 11 points and dished out three assists, and
Lily Woodis (Dewittville/Chautauqua Lake) scored eight points on 3-of-4 shooting.
Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) and
Mariah Huss (Kenmore/Sacred Heart Academy) each grabbed five rebounds, while Huss and
Kaeli McAnally (Islip) had three steals each.
Kendall Harris led Hamilton (5-0) with 26 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals. She made 4-of-6 3-pointers and 8-of-14 field goals overall. Taylor Lambo scored nine points and hauled in eight rebounds and Althea Hill scored eight points.
Cortland trailed 16-9 with 2:54 left in the first quarter but scored seven of the next eight points, capped by a Huss layup at the buzzer, and trailed 17-16 after 10 minutes. Hamilton grabbed a 27-18 lead with 3:37 remaining in the second quarter, but Cortland again responded and was down by only three, 32-29, at halftime.
Cortland took its only lead of the game at 34-32 on a Streety layup with 7:04 left in the third quarter. Courtney Shay made a 3-pointer about a minute later to give Hamilton a 35-34 lead, followed by a Harris trey at the 5:44 mark to push the margin to four. Similar to the second quarter, Cortland trailed by nine, 49-40, with 2:34 left but closed the deficit to 49-45 entering the fourth period.
The Red Dragons were still down four, 51-47 with less than eight minutes left but were held to two points the rest of the way. Hamilton led 53-47 with 7:42 left, and neither team scored again until Shay hit a 3-pointer with 2:43 remaining to give the guests a 56-47 lead. Woodis made a layup with 2:02 remaining for Cortland, but Hamilton scored the last five points from the foul line, four by Harris and one by Lambo.
