Cortland Claims SUNYAC Women's Soccer Title; Axtell Earns School-Record 196th Win

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The top-seeded Cortland women's soccer team captured its 10th State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and first since 2019 with a 3-0 victory over second-seeded Brockport at Holloway Field.

Cortland (11-2-5) earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs with the victory. The NCAA pairings will be announced during a selection show that will air Monday, Nov. 6, at 1:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.

In addition, the victory was Cortland 20th-year head coach Heidi Axtell's 196th career victory, making her the Red Dragons' career victory leader. She has an overall record of 196-117-53, eclipsing the 195 wins recorded by Chris Malone from 1982-94.

Graduate student back Bryn Thompson (Hopewell Junction/Arlington) was named the SUNYAC Tournament MVP after helping Cortland post its ninth shutout of the season. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook), Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) and Katie Cosenza (Stony Brook/Ward Melville), along with Brockport's Madeline McCrosson, Karlie Mann and Kellie Gentile, Oswego's Amber McDermott and Courtney Key, and Geneseo's Lindsey Matthews and Lindsay Wright.

Liz Allen (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) scored the lone goal of the first half just 3:53 into the contest when she took a long through-ball from Vuotto and beat the Brockport goalkeeper McCrosson 1-on-1. Hannah Blacher (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) headed in a cross from Cosenza in the 51st minute to make it 2-0, and Cosenza scored off an assist from Kayla Valerioti (Oakdale/Connetquot) in the 68th minute to conclude the scoring.

Spendal recorded the shutout in goal for Cortland with seven saves. McCrosson finished with three saves for Brockport (12-2-6).

Following the game, Cortland sophomore Lexi Burke (East Williston/The Wheatley School) was honored as the SUNYAC's Women's Soccer Elite 20 Award. The award goes to the student-athlete at each of the SUNYAC's championship sites with the highest overall grade point average who is at least a sophomore academically. Burke is an exercise science major with a 3.98 GPA.
