#13 Cortland Earns 3-1 Comeback Win vs. Stevens in NCAA First Round

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 13th-ranked Cortland field hockey team scored three second-half  goals and earned a come-from-behind, 3-1, victory versus Stevens in the first round of the NCAA Div. III Field Hockey Tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons won their 10th consecutive game and improved to 18-1 on the season. The Ducks had their program-record 14-game winning streak snapped and finished the season at 17-3.

Cortland next travels to Grantham, Pa., to face fifth-ranked Messiah in the second round at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Junior Jamie Snyder (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) paced Cortland's offense with her 11th and 12th goals of the season. Junior Gianna Trunfio (Clinton) tallied her team-high 20th goal of the season, and junior Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) recorded an assist. Sophomore goalie Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) made one save.

Graduate student Lynda Farinella (South Plainfield, NJ) scored her team-high 14th goal of the season for Stevens. First-year Sophia Cozza (New Hope, PA/New Hope-Solebury) assisted on the goal. Sophomore goalie Lily Wierzbicki (Davis, CA/Davis Senior) registered 12 saves, including 11 in the second half.

The first quarter featured much of the play in the midfield with the teams combining for just three shots over the 15 minutes. The Ducks' lone shot, however, produced their goal at the 6:49 mark. Junior Makenna Quigley (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) inserted a penalty corner to the top of the circle. Cozza blasted a low ball in front where Farinella deflected a shot inside the right post. Second-quarter play remained tight with Cortland holding a 3-2 edge in shots as each team put one shot on cage.

The Red Dragons took control of the game in the second half, eventually finishing with a 16-3 shot advantage. Snyder tied the game at 35:01 when she knocked in a rebound into the open goal after Wierzbicki denied a shot by Trunfio after a Cortland penalty corner.

Trunfio scored the game winner in similar fashion just 2:11 into the fourth quarter. After Wierzbicki stopped a shot by Corrigan off a penalty corner, Trunfio tapped in the loose ball to make it a 2-1 game. Snyder completed the scoring with 3:19 remaining in regulation when she completed a breakaway after receiving a long through ball from Corrigan for the 3-1 final.
