Three Red Dragons Earn D3football.com All-America Honors

Three Cortland football players ­­– senior wide receiver Cole Burgess (Greenwich), junior quarterback Zac Boyes (Buffalo/Kenmore West) and junior running back Jaden AlfanoStJohn (Westhampton/Westhampton Beach) – have been selected as 2023 All-Americans by the website D3football.com. Burgess was named to All-America second team, Boyes to the third team and AlfanoStJohn to the fourth team. 
 
The team were announced just prior to Cortland's game versus North Central College in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, the NCAA Division III championship game, in Salem, Va. Cortland (13-1) is making its first-ever appearance in the national finals. 
 
Burgess currently has 76 receptions for 1,241 yards and 14 touchdowns, including five 100-yard receiving games. He caught 12 passes for 145 yards and three TDs in the NCAA semifinals at Randolph-Macon, had five catches for 116 yards and a TD in the NCAA quarterfinals at Alma, and caught nine passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns versus Brockport in a win that clinched the Empire 8 title. His 14 TD receptions are the second-highest total in a season at Cortland, as are his 1,241 receiving yards. He's Cortland's career leader with 33 TD catches and second with 2,999 career receiving yards. 
 
Boyes is 245-of-341 passing (71.8 percent) for 3,671 yards and 39 touchdowns with just five interceptions and has run 128 times for 651 yards and eight scores. He has four 300-yard passing games and has thrown two or more TD passes in 12 of 14 games. Boyes passed for 400 yards and five touchdowns in the NCAA quarterfinals at Alma, 279 yards and three scores in the NCAA semifinals at Randolph-Macon, 308 yards and four TDs in a win over Brockport and 397 yards and five scores in a three-point loss to Susquehanna. He is Cortland's single-season leader in passing yardage, TD passes and total offense (4,322) and the Red Dragons' career leader in passing yards (6,722), TD passes (68) and total offense (7,875). 
 
AlfanoStJohn has rushed 247 times for 1,378 yards (5.6 per carry) and 17 touchdowns and has caught 15 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown. He's rushed for more than 100 yards six times, including three of Cortland's four NCAA playoff games, to date. He ran for 193 yards and two touchdowns in the NCAA quarterfinals at Alma, 157 yards and a score in the first round at Endicott, and 108 yards on 16 carries, with two touchdowns, in the semifinals at Randolph-Macon.
