ELIZABETHOWN, PA. – The Cortland wrestling team earned two individual titles and 11 overall top-six placings at the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic Saturday.
The Red Dragons finished third of 10 in the team standings with 139.5 points. Host school Elizabethtown finished first with 152.5 points, followed by Wilkes with 145.5 points and Cortland. Roanoke (126 points) and McDaniel (119.5 points) rounded out the top five.
Sophomore
Angelo Centrone (Mahopac), ranked eighth nationally at 149 pounds, captured his weight class with a 5-0 record, earning bonus points in each bout and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler. Freshman
Culley Bellino (Canastota) won the 141-pound title with a 4-0 record that included four pins. Nine other wrestlers placed, including a runner-up finish by senior
Leo Rabinovich (Staten Island/Tottenville) at 285 pounds and a third-place showing by nationally fifth-ranked senior
J.C. Cardenas (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) at 133 pounds.
Centrone improved his season record to 11-0, including nine technical falls. He opened with a 15-0 technical fall in 1:00 versus Lucas Ibacache of McDaniel, followed with a second technical fall of 21-6 in 2:47 of Owen Cherry of Roanoke and reached the semifinals with a 21-5 technical fall in 4:37 against Wilkes' Colton Thorpe. Centrone added his fourth technical fall, 19-3 in 3:31 over Ryan Santiago of Wilkes in the semifinals before earning a 13-5 major decision against nationally top-ranked Thomas Monn of McDaniel in the title bout.
Just as impressive was Bellino's run to the title at 141 pounds. He started with a fall against Orion Newell of Scranton in just 32 seconds and needed just 44 seconds to earn his second pin versus Elizabethtown's Scott Reagan. In the semifinals, Bellino pinned Dustin Smith of Roanoke in 3:30 and capped off his performance with a fall in 2:21 of Jack Bauer of Wilkes in 2:21. Bellino raised his season record to 14-3 with a team-best 11 pins.
Rabinovich went 3-1 at the invitational, improving his season record to 10-1. His day started with a 10-second pin versus Nick Lopez of Elmira and followed with a 25-5 technical fall in 5:00 against Elizabethtown's Kurt Driscoll. Rabinovich then pinned 13th-ranked Caleb Burkhart of Wilkes in 4:51 in the semifinals before dropping a 5-4 decision against ninth-ranked Dylan Waller of Elizabethtown in the title bout.
Cardenas, ranked fifth nationally at 133 pounds, posted a 3-1 record to improve to 13-1 on the season. He began with a 15-0 technical fall against Samuel Kimmel of Wilkes in 2:52, then recorded a pin in 1:30 over Alex DuFour of McDaniel. After a tight 5-4 setback in the semifinals, Cardenas earned his third-place showing with a 12-6 decision over Michael Richardson of Wilkes.
