Red Dragons Sweep Rare Road/Home Double Feature

OSWEGO, N.Y. and CORTLAND, N.Y. – In a unique split-location competition, the Cortland wrestling team won a pair of dual matches on Saturday, defeating host SUNY Oswego in the afternoon, 24-13, followed by a 27-12 victory at home versus New Jersey City University in the evening.
 
Cortland (6-7) will travel to Ithaca on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for a dual with the Bombers as part of the "Rumble and Tumble" combined event with the schools' women's gymnastics teams.
 
Prior to the home match versus NJCU, Cortland recognized seven members of its senior class - Jaden Datz (Pittsburgh, PA/Southmoreland), Steven Gazzillo (New Windsor/Cornwall), Dylan Houseknecht (Odessa/Odessa-Montour), Richard Munoz (Centereach/Ward Melville), Amos Rivera (Carmel/Fox Lane), Vinnie Santilli (South Glens Falls) and Brian Torres (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus).
 
In the win over Oswego, Cortland won the first four matches to take a 14-0 lead. Christian Lievano (East Setauket) opened with a 19-3 technical fall in 5:52 at 125 pounds, followed by a 7-4 decision by Devin Walker (Brentwood) at 133 pounds. Santilli won in overtime, 3-1, at 141 pounds and Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) was a 6-5 winner at 149 pounds.
 
Oswego got on the board with a win at 157 pounds, but Cortland answered with a 14-5 major decision by Datz at 165 pounds. Oswego posted a major decision at 174 pounds, but Cortland secured the victory with decisions by Torres, 7-2, at 184 pounds and Gazzillo, 10-3, at 197 pounds. The host Lakers closed the match with a pin at 285 pounds.
 
Cortland won six of its 10 matches versus NJCU, with five of those victories resulting in bonus points with a pin, two technical falls and two major decisions. The match started at 157 pounds with a 10-1 major decision by Kyle Klein (Miller Place). The Gothic Knights earned decisions in the next two bouts to take a 6-4 lead, but Cortland regained the lead on a pin in 4:10 by Torres at 184 pounds.
 
The teams split decisions in the next two weight classes, with Cortland's victory a 6-0 shutout by Chris Bold (Miller Place) at 285 pounds. NJCU pulled to within 13-12 after a decision at 125 pounds, but Cortland closed out the night with three straight wins - an 18-0 technical fall in 1:46 by Walker at 133, a 10-2 major decision by Santilli at 141, and a 25-10 technical fall in 3:18 by Centrone at 149.
