ITHACA, N.Y. – Nationally 15th-ranked Matt Beyer recorded a pin with 22 seconds left in the 149-pound bout to give the Ithaca wrestling team a dramatic 23-18 win versus Cortland Wednesday night as part of the Rumble and Tumble with the gymnastics teams. The Bombers improved to 14-3. The Red Dragons dropped to 6-8.
The match started at 157 pounds, and Ithaca opened up a 9-0 lead after the first three weight classes with three decisions. Senior
Brian Torres (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus), ranked fourth in the NWCA Mideast Region, registered a 12-3 major decision for Cortland to make it a 9-4 match. The Bombers stretched their advantage to 18-4 after nationally fifth-ranked Eze Chukwuezi recorded a pin in 3:38 at 197 pounds and Jeremy Mazzella posted a 7-5 decision at 285 pounds.
After Cortland was awarded a forfeit at 125 pounds, senior
Richard Munoz (Centereach/Ward Melville) earned a 10-2 major decision at 133 pounds to pull Cortland to within 18-4. Senior
Vinnie Santilli (South Glens Falls) followed with a 12-4 major decision at 141 pounds to tie the match at 18-18, leaving the outcome of the matchup to the 149-pounders.
Cortland freshman
Angelo Centrone (Mahopac), ranked sixth in the NWCA Mideast Region, built a 9-5 lead late into the third period against Beyer. Beyer then earned a takedown and a quick pin at the 6:38 mark to secure the Ithaca victory. The Bombers were deducted one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct following the bout.
