Red Dragon Women Remain in Second at SUNYACs; Zachgo Claims Second Diving Crown

Leah Bernhardt finished second in the 200-yard freestyle to earn all-league honors
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Ashley Zachgo (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) earned her second league diving title in three days and Cortland also picked up all-league performances in the 200-yard freestyle and the 400-yard medley relay as the Red Dragons maintained their second-place position during the second full day of competition at the 2023 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
 
Geneseo leads the team standings with 713 points, followed by Cortland with 409 and Brockport with 335. New Paltz (273), Oneonta (193), Fredonia (168), Potsdam and Buffalo State (149 each), and Oswego (144) round out the nine-team field. Competition concludes Saturday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.
 
Zachgo won the 1-meter diving crown with a score of 462.70 points, almost 50 points better than the second-place finisher. She won the 3-meter title on Wednesday. Leah Bernhardt (Groton) was the conference runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.70, and the 400-yard medley relay team of Emily Lantry (Massena/St. Lawrence), Nicole Murphy (Saratoga Springs), Julia Bryce (Rochester/School of the Arts) and Bernhardt finished third in 4:04.93.
 
The top three finishers in each event earn All-SUNYAC honors. Winners are first team, runners-up are second team and third-place finishers are third team.
 
The Red Dragons picked up seven other top-eight finishes on Friday. Caitlin Elsasser (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) finished sixth in the 400-yard IM (4:55.78), followed by Evelyn Currier (Waterford/Shenendehowa) in seventh (5:03.58, 5:03.42 prelims). Adriane Casey (West Islip) finished sixth in 1-meter diving (354.80 points). Areiannah Martinez-Reyes (Queens/Benjamin Cardozo) finished seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.31) and eighth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.17, 1:02.55 prelims). Mackenzie Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central) was seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.10) and Bryce placed eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.91, 1:00.43 prelims).
 
Murphy and Lantry each won "B" finals for ninth-place overall finishes - Murphy in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.76) and Lantry in the 100 backstroke (1:01.01).
 
Cortland recorded eight other top-16 scoring finishes: Madi Monaghan (Chili/Gates Chili) finished 10th (1:01.36) and Anna Stahurski (Oakdale/Connetquot) was 16th (1:06.74) in the 100 backstroke; Emma Bodganowicz-Wilson (Schenectady) finished 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.38, 1:11.48 prelims); Elsasser was 12th (1:02.67, 1:02.56) and Alayna Miller (Hilton) finished 14th (1:03.46) in the 100 butterfly; Emma Heppner (Orchard Park) placed 12th in 1-meter diving (277.75 points); Kaila O'Hara (East Islip) finished 13th in the 200 freestyle (2:01.25); and Kaitlin Camacho (Huntington/St. Dominic) was 14th in the 400 IM (5:24.18).
