Cortland Competes at Muhlenberg National Guard Mideast Futures

Richard Munoz posted a 5-1 record
ALLENTOWN, PA. – Twelve Cortland wrestlers competed at the Muhlenberg National Guard Mideast Futures Tournament Sunday afternoon in the final regular-season action for the Red Dragons.

Graduate student Richard Munoz (Centereach/Ward Melville) turned in Cortland's top performance, posting a 5-1 record at 133 pounds for a fourth-place finish. Due to his wrestling in six previous bouts, Munoz was unable to compete in the third-place matchup.

Two Red Dragons, senior Vinnie Santilli (South Glens Falls) at 141 pounds and freshman Justin Klein (Miller Place) at 157 pounds, registered 3-2 records. Four freshmen, Wyatt Gentzel (Bellport), Christan Lievano (East Setauket/Ward Melville), Devin Walker (Brentwood) and Christian Paredes (East Moriches/Connetquot) each went 2-2.

Munoz raised his season record to 17-6 with his performance. He opened with a 9-6 decision over Andrew Finatrei of Stevens and earned a pin in 1:15 against York's Joel DeFreytas to advance to the quarterfinals before dropping to the consolation bracket after his next bout. Munoz rebounded with an 18-2 technical fall over teammate Walker, a 15-3 major decision against Finatrei and a pin in 3:41 over Muhlenberg's David Rosenfarb in 3:41 to advance to the third-place bout.

Santilli began with a pin in 1:37 of Alvernia's Kevin Rainey. He moved to the consolation round after a second-round defeat and recorded a pin of Jeorcy Pena of Muhlenberg in 1:54 and an 8-5 decision against York's Jack Doran before dropping a close 9-8 decision in the consolation semifinals.

Klein earned a 14-6 major decision over Trevor Sheehan of St. John Fisher to start his day. After a narrow 7-5 loss in the next round, Klein recorded a 17-2 technical fall against Anton Esterbrook of Penn College and a 13-1 major decision versus Niko Partsanakis of Wilkes before falling in the consolation fourth round.

The Red Dragons return to action at the NCAA Div. III Mideast Regionals Feb. 24-25 hosted by Ithaca College.
