Henry Reaches 100 Career Wins at Day 1 of NCAA Championships

ROANOKE, VA. – Graduate student Demitreus Henry (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) recorded his 100th career victory during the first day of competition at the NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia.

Henry, seeded eighth, recorded his 100th career win in the first round, pinning Greg Linahon of Central College in just 1:06. He registered a takedown and four back points before recording the quick fall. In the quarterfinals, Henry lost a tough 6-4 decision in the first sudden-victory period to top-seeded Coy Spooner of Coast Guard. After a scoreless first period, Henry built a 4-2 lead after two periods on two takedowns. Spooner, however, tied the bout with 49 seconds remaining in regulation with a takedown to send the match to overtime, and he earned the decision with a decision 43 seconds into the two-minute sudden-victory period. In the consolation bracket, Henry dropped a 3-1 decision to Dylan Harr of Johnson & Wales. After a scoreless first period, Harr took a 2-0 lead into the third period and held on for the 3-1 decision after a Henry escape. Henry finished the season with a 19-4 record and his career with a 100-24 mark. 

Three other Red Dragons also had their seasons come to an end after day one. Junior J.C. Cardenas (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) at 133 pounds posted a 1-2 record, and sophomores Cody Merwin (Walton) at 125 pounds and Cahal Donovan (Marietta/Marcellus) at 141 pounds each posted 0-2 records.

Cardenas, also seeded eighth, opened with a pin of Luke Kowolski of Gettysburg in 2:00. Kowolski quickly built a 6-0 lead with a takedown and back points before Cardenas escaped, earned a takedown and registered the fall. In his next bout against undefeated and top-seeded North Central's Robbie Precin, Cardenas was pinned in 1:07. In the consolation bracket, Cardenas fell to Coast Guard's Chase Randall, 16-2, to complete his season with a 31-4 record.

Merwin opened against eighth-seeded Brady Koontz of Dubuque. Merwin held a 1-0 lead after two periods with an escape in the second period, but Koontz worked a quick escape in the third period, earned a takedown with 39 seconds remaining and recorded a pin at 6:28. He next faced Luke Hoerle of Stevens in the consolation bracket and dropped a 14-3 major decision to finish his season with a 20-11 record.

Donovan's first bout came against eighth-seeded James Rodriguez of Castleton. The two entered the third period tied at 2-2, but Rodriguez earned an escape and three takedowns to secure a 9-4 decision. In the consolation bracket, Donovan faced top-seed Zayren Terukina of Wartburg who was upset in the first round. Donovan took an early 2-0 lead with a takedown, and the bout was tied 3-3 at the end of the first period. Terukina then earned an escape and two second-period takedowns and added three more takedowns and riding time in the third period to clinch a 15-7 major decision. Donovan finished the season with a 22-4 record.

UPDATE (3/11/23): Cortland finished in 40th place out if 71 schools in the final team standings.
