LEXINGTON, S.C. – Jack Anderson and Kevin Mackenzie combined for eight of Case Western Reserve's 19 hits as the Spartans defeated Cortland, 17-5, in a non-league baseball game at Lexington County Stadium.
The teams will meet again Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Lexington.
Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) went 3-for-5 with an RBI,
Dylan Mackenzie (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) was 2-for-6 with an RBI and
Jon Munoz (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI for Cortland (5-7).
James LaBruno (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) allowed six runs, two earned, in an inning and two thirds and suffered the loss.
For Case (5-4), Anderson went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two RBI and three runs and Mackenzie was 4-for-5 with a homer, four RBI and three runs. Jay Smith and Nick Harms each registered two hits, Matt Trout drove in three runs and Trey Haley homered, walked three times, drove in two and scored twice. Jonathan Simon relieved starter Evan Faxon in the fifth and earned the win after completing the inning.
Cortland took an early 1-0 lead on a Bonacci RBI single in the top of the second, but Case scored six times in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a Mackenzie two-run homer. The Red Dragons trailed 9-4 before Case broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth.
