Cortland Shuts Down Albertus Magnus, 8-0

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Kimberly Westenberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) tossed a three-hit shutout and Cortland's offense pounded out 13 hits as the Red Dragon softball team defeated Albertus Magnus, 8-0 in six innings, at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.

The Red Dragons (2-0) had their opening game of the day Monday morning versus Mount Saint Vincent postponed due to poor field conditions as a result of rain on Sunday. That game will likely not be made up. Cortland faced Albertus Magnus on another field at the Central Park Complex in the afternoon.

Westenberg, in her first collegiate start, struck out six and walked none in six innings for the victory. The game was called in the bottom of the sixth due to the eight-run rule after Cortland scored twice in the bottom of the inning.

Brooke Scheibe (Sayville) hit her first collegiate homer and finished 1-for-2 with three RBI. Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Tori Reich (Cornwall) and Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) each finished 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, and Elaina Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) went 2-for-4. McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI and Gina Meyers (Liverpool) tripled and scored a run.

Janelle Franklin was 2-for-3 with a double and Isabelle Smith went 1-for-2 for the Falcons (2-2). Erin Dighello took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in two-plus innings.

Ornstein led off the bottom of the first with a single and eventually scored on a Barry sac fly. Reich led off the second with a double and Scheibe hit a two-run homer to left to make it 3-0. The Red Dragons added two in the third. Wright doubled and scored from third two batters later on Barry's groundout. Koch doubled and pinch runner Megan LaMont (Amsterdam) scored on Reich's single to center.

Barry walked with one out in the fifth, Koch singled, Reich reached on an error and Scheibe hit a sac fly to right to push the lead to 6-0. Cortland closed out the game in the sixth. Meyers led off with a triple and scored on a one-out sac fly liner by Wright. Westenberg singled, pinch runner Anj Ferrara (Niskayuna) went to second when Barry lined a single off the pitcher's glove, and Koch smashed a single through the hole between third and short to drive in Ferrara with the game-ending run.

Cortland is idle Tuesday and will face Susquehanna and Mt. Aloysius, both from Pennsylvania, on Wednesday at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in North Myrtle Beach.
